Ideal for the beginner or intermediate chess player, this machine also features a teaching mode. This can provide voice announcements of illegal moves, spoken warnings of threats to your pieces and announcements when the player has made a poor move. If the player makes an illegal move and is advised of this by the machine, the player can then press the why? button for a more detailed explanation of why the move is not allowed, further aiding the learning process. The machine supports <I>en passant</I> captures, pawn promotions (when a pawn reaches the opposite side of the board) and castling options. In total, there are 72 levels of playing strength, including 6 countdown levels during which the machine always makes its move within pre-determined times ranging from 5 to 30 seconds. On these levels, the player is invited to make their move within the same time limits as the machine in order to be playing at the same level, although moves are still accepted after the time limit has elapsed. If a mistake is made, the user has the option to take back the move and choose another, further enhancing the learning process. There is also a hint button that makes the computer suggest a move to the player. Sound can be switched on or off with the simple press of a button and there are three volume settings from which to choose. The machine can be switched off during the middle of a game and will retain the positions of the pieces in its memory until power is restored, subject to there being sufficient power in the batteries. The comprehensive training guide contains 100 exercises in which the user is invited to find the correct move, and these can be completed on the machine with the reward of points. There are 5 styles of play to choose from, ranging from level 1 which is the most passive, to level 5 which is the most aggressive.
